Why is it vital to fertilize a lawn some may wonder? Isn’t it enough to just water it and mow regularly? Fertilizer provides your lawn with nutrients that soil lacks, keeping your lawn healthy by aiding in the recovery of foot and pest hurt,
making new leaf and root growth, and reducing weeds. All of this works to give you the gorgeous lawn you hoped for. Now, how do you fertilize a lawn?
Before you fertilize a lawn, you want to identify whether you have warm season or cool season grass. Most of the US is transitional, so you can tell by warm season grass turning brown after the first frost and cool season grass staying green year around.
The next step to get a gorgeous lawn is finding the pH level of your soil. This will help you determine what kind of fertilizer is best for your yard. A pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 are the best situation to grow quality grass.
The last step is to measure the size of your yard. When you fertilize a lawn you have to know how much fertilizer you will need. The fertilizer package will tell you how many square feet it covers, so you need to determine the square footage of your yard. You can do this by multiplying the length of your lawn by its width, and then subtract the square footage of the household, driveway and all other areas not being fertilized.
If fertilizing cool season grasses, you will fertilize heavy in the fall and lightly or not at all in the spring. When the temperature is between 60-70 degrees, cool season grass grows the best. You want to place the fertilizer so it is effective before severe cold weather comes. If you do choose to fertilize a lawn in the spring, make sure to lay the fertilizer before the warm weather of summer comes.
Warm season grasses grow best between 80-95 degrees depending on the region, so it is best to start on the rise this grass in late spring and summer. As the lawn starts to turn green in spring, it is the aptly time to start fertilizing. Make sure to the fertilizer is used up before the warmest part of the summer, and then fertilize again after the peak of the summer to ensure you get a gorgeous lawn.
When really fertilizing a lawn, there are five simple steps to follow. First, make sure the spreader and fertilizer are dry. Next, set the rate-of-flow according to the fertilizer bag, but if you have any doubt it is surpass to fertilize less then more. Then you close the hopper vent and start filling the hopper slowly with the spreader placed on a hard surface. As you start diffusion the fertilizer, spread it in a criss-cross manner evenly across the lawn. Finally, sterile the spreader thoroughly and you are done fertilizing a lawn that easily.

How To Get a Greener Lawn Organically: Life Around Home with William Moss
Posted on January 16, 2011 |
Life Around Home’s William Moss provides a list of tips on how to make your lawn greener, and doing so organically, promoting a green lifestyle! William Moss discusses the vital of fertilizing from mid-Spring to late Summer/early Fall. You don’t want to fertilize when the grass is not on the rise since the fertilizer runs down the sewer system and pollutes rivers and streams. Next, William discusses the importance of using an organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer builds the soil as it fertilizes. William Moss also stresses the importance of watering your lawn early in the morning. The water will soak deeper into the soil allowing the plant roots to anchor in the soil surpass and build a more drought resistant lawn. William Moss also discusses the importance of mowing your grass and to raise the blades up, at least by 3 to 3.5 inches. That way the grass will form a thicker canopy across the ground, and enable a deeper root system, and block out weeds. For more helpful tips on green living, subscribe to our channel.

Planting Around Tree Roots
Posted on October 10, 2010 |
Planting Around Tree Roots
Have you ever tried to cut through layers of maple roots to plant that groundcover or high top shrub that you so diligently selected out?Have you ever establish that after picking the perfect spot to plant that there is a four-inch diameter root in the middle of the hole? Well there is a surpass way to plant in the shade and it does not occupy digging at all. After years of struggling with pick axes and shovels, I ongoing planting on top of the soil.
The first step to my above- ground planting technique is to remove all debris from the planting area ( i.e., leaves, sticks, ancient mulch). Next, lay down ancient newspaper in the planting area. This will help reduce weeds and prevent the ancient tree roots from invading your planting area until the new plants are established. It is best to water the newspaper to prevent the wind from blowing it away.
Now add pinebark mulch on top of the newspaper to the depth of the pots. If you’re using one gallon plants this would be about 6″. The reason I use pinebark mulch is that it is not toxic to plant roots. Hardwood mulch or any mulch containing woody material will rob your plants of nutrients as it breaks down. Be careful not to pile the pine bark on the existing tree trunks. That would be an invitation for insects and diseases.
If your planting area is large, the pinebark can be bought in bulk. It is sold by the cubic yard at landscape give companies. A cubic yard is 27cubic feet. If the area will be 6″ deep, you can expect to cover 54 square feet per cubic yard. That same area would take 9 (3) cubic foot bags from your local backyard center.
After the area is covered in bark the holes can be dug by hand. Remove the plants from the pots and pull at the roots if they are wrapped in circles. If the plants are very root bound cut from top to bottom with a knife or shovel. Place your new plant in the hole and backfill to the top of the root ball. Don’t place any mulch on the top of the root ball. Everything that was above the roots in the container should still be seen.
Water the bark well to settle in the plants. A drip hose should be used for the first few weeks even as the plants become established. It is hard to say how often to water since it depends on the time of the year and the amount of wind the area will receive. I like to run the drip hose for a couple of hours and then check by hand to see if the water has saturated the bark. Let the area become slightly dry before watering again. I have seen far more plants killed with too much, very than not enough, water.
The pinebark has very modest nutrient content and needs additional fertilizer. A slow release fertilizer is best. Slow release fertilizers have a coating that prevents all the nutrients from being released at once. This prevents the plants from being injured and your fertilizer money from being washed away. All backyard centers have many different brands of fertilizers, so question a sales person for a excellent slow release brand and follow the directions on the bag.
I have used this technique many times with fantastic success. So place away the pick axe and the shovel and delight in planting around the trees.
